1981 - The Tanker (Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior)

The tanker truck in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) is one of the most memorable vehicles in action movie history — not just for its size and impact, but for the pivotal role it plays in the film’s plot and climactic chase sequence.

In the Film:

  • Purpose: The truck is used by Max and the settlers to transport a large load of fuel (or so it seems) away from their compound while being pursued by the marauding gang led by Lord Humungus.

  • Twist: The tanker is ultimately revealed to be a decoy, filled with sand, while the real fuel had been smuggled out earlier in oil drums.

Real-World Vehicle:

  • Base Truck: A Mack R-600 series truck, also known as the Mack “R” model — a tough and durable American-made semi-truck from the 1970s.

    • Nicknamed the “Mack Bulldog” due to the company’s logo and its sturdy design.

  • Modifications for the Film:

    • Reinforced bumper and bullbar (used for ramming vehicles)

    • Armored side panels

    • Chain mesh and plating over the windshield

    • Additional fuel tanks and rugged accessories to make it look cobbled-together and ready for a wasteland

Role in the Legendary Chase Scene:

  • The final 13-minute tanker chase is one of the most celebrated action sequences in film history — all done with practical stunts, real vehicles, and minimal special effects.

  • Max drives the tanker through hostile territory while pursued by an army of customized, deadly vehicles.

  • Stuntman Guy Norris performed many of the most dangerous sequences — including one where a vehicle flips end-over-end after hitting a wrecked bike.

Behind-the-Scenes Facts:

  • Filmed in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia.

  • The tanker was real and fully functional — not just a prop.

  • A second, mock-up trailer (filled with sand) was used for shots where crashes or stunts would destroy it.

    Legacy:

  • The Road Warrior’s tanker is often cited as a defining image of post-apocalyptic cinema.

  • It inspired countless imitations in movies, games (Fallout, Borderlands), and pop culture.

Where is it now?
The truck was wrecked in the final sequence, this and the back up truck were wrecked and parted out and seem to have vanished completely after filming
